Māori Data Governance Model

A model developed by Te Kāhui Raraunga for how Māori data should be governed, recognising Māori data as a taonga and supporting Māori data sovereignty. IAR's Māori Data Value Framework is based on it.

In practice

The Māori Data Governance Model, developed by Te Kāhui Raraunga on behalf of the Data Iwi Leaders Group, sets expectations for how Māori data is held, accessed, and stewarded, grounded in the principles of Te Mana Raraunga, the Māori Data Sovereignty Network. For information and records management it shapes how records about Māori, where they are taonga, are described, accessed, and preserved. IAR's Māori Data Value Framework is based on this model and has been independently validated.

Frequently asked questions

What is Māori data sovereignty?

The principle that (data about Māori, by Māori, or from te ao Māori) should be subject to Māori governance, reflecting Māori rights and interests. Te Mana Raraunga articulates the principles; the Māori Data Governance Model (Te Kāhui Raraunga) sets out how to apply them.
