Archives New Zealand

The part of the Department of Internal Affairs that provides public-sector recordkeeping guidance, supports the Chief Archivist, and runs the public archives system.

In practice

Most staff interact with Archives New Zealand indirectly, through their own IM/RM team rather than directly. Archives NZ issues guidance, publishes the mandatory standards, and supports the Chief Archivist's statutory functions.

Frequently asked questions

Is Archives New Zealand the same as the Chief Archivist?

They are closely linked but distinct. The Chief Archivist is the statutory regulator who issues standards and authorises disposal; Archives New Zealand is the organisation, part of the Department of Internal Affairs, that supports those functions and runs the public archives.
